2016. 27th Week, Weekly news summary

Hey guys, here comes the second installment of our weekly news summary. Loads of things happened in the world again, and we created what we though are the most important ones from those, and of course we couldn’t miss out our program recommendations either. So three, two, one…

News from the world

Local

United Kingdom

Even though this picture has been uploaded to the HOPE not hate Facebook page, on the 2nd June, 2016. We didn’t find it before our weekly closure previously, so even though it is a bit late, but we would still like to share this with you. As we have found it quite interesting. At London Euston Station, volunteers have put the pictured transparent, with a bucket full of flowers (and it has been confirmed, that the bucket has been refilled several times). And as far my opinion goes, I don’t think I have to say any other things. The picture speaks for itself.

The next Iron Lady is coming?

According to Capital Wirral News, there are only two candidates left for the position of Prime Minister. Theresa May, and Andrea Leadsom. Just as a reminder, since 28th November, 1990. The United Kingdom haven’t had a female prime minister. And it seems like this could very well happen now.

10 days of war in Eastern Europe

25 years ago, (on the 7th July, 1991) a ten day conflict has came to an end, in the Republic of Yugoslavia. As we know Yugoslavia has been formed from six sovereign republics, five nations, four languages, three religions, and two alphabets, and it was only controlled by one centralized government, and when after 1989 everything started to go a bit south, and after a while the situation escalated to a higher level.

And that should be it, as we wouldn’t wish to say more about this, just wanted to remind everyone, and remember for the losses of everyone in a few lines.

For our heroes

During the afternoon, on the 1st July, 2016 tragic has happened on the Hortobágy. Soldiers of the Hungarian Defence Force’s, Warship and Mine Disposal Regiment, have been clearing an area from explosive devices. When at around two o’clock in the afternoon, Hungarian Local Time, a 250 kg, II. World War Russian bomb has exploded. The cause of the explosion is still unknown. But the fact is, that Master Sergeant Juhász Atilla, Master Sergeant Rózsa János Nándor, Sergeant Balázs Ádám, and Corporal Kozár Gábor have lost their lives in the line of duty. And Master Sergeant Tóth Péter has been seriously injured, but has been stabilized since. After the events, Hungarian Minister of Defense, Simicskó István, has announced that the soldiers have received a posthumous rank of Lieutenant. And commended them “For the Homeland” award, which is the highest possible commendation.

After the events of this tragic day, there were many speculations, on how, and why these events have happened, and the investigation is still on-going. The only thing we know for sure, is that their lives are a major loss, for the families, the armed forces, and for the country as well.

So hereby I’d like to take the opportunity, to say our condolences on behalf of the groups of editors, and on behalf of our followers to the families. And also we would like to wish a speedy recovery for Master Sergeant Tóth Péter.

Please honor them, with one-minute of silence!

Technology

Have you ever checked if someone your details have got stolen? No?! Well, we have good news!

As on the website Have I been Pwned you’d be able to search for details, from a previously hacked site. It is absolutely simple to use the portal, just type in your email address to the built in search engine, and in about one or two seconds you’ll get the answer, on how safe your details are!

Make a breathalyzer from your phone.

On the other day I have found this video on the YouTube channel called Unbox Therapy, and to be completely honest I have found it a great idea, which Lou showcased. Technically it is nothing else, than a USB OTB stick, what is containing a few sensors, which are capable (just as well as the ones issued to the police) to analyse the air blown into it, and give back a blood-alcohol level.

More details in the video!

Aviation

Swiss has received their first Bombardier CS100.

The type of the aircraft might not be familiar for most, as we are spCS100eaking of a relatively new plane. And as the HB-JBA tail-numbered aircraft is the first, what any airline in the world would use for commercial purposes. And even though some of you might have seen this bird in March, at that point in the factory livery of Bombardier. Soon this could be an everyday sight on most of the airports in Europe.

As Swiss has placed an order of 30 for the smaller variant of the CSeries, which will replace the aging Fokker 100s, and Avro RJ100 Avroliners.

App of the week

iOS

Tandem

All of us could possibly remember the application called Duolingo, many of you guys might still use it, or maybe just download it automatically, when you switch to a new phone, and even though this could be considered quite a good option for improving language skills. It couldn’t replace one thing, and that would be a native teacher, who is available anytime we wish. And that is how we got to Tandem. Similarly to last weeks’ app, I haven’t met for the first time with this application now. I think I have used it, ever since I’ve moved to Newcastle, as I wanted to get back to my German skills, and maybe pick up one more language.

Which went well, more or less, but probably I have helped more to those Russian users, who wanted to improve their English, than they helped me improve my Russian!

And good news, the languages you can learn, or practice, and the amount of people you can do this with is almost infinite, and also if you want to have a qualified teacher, now you have the opportunity for that as well. Soon we’ll be returning with a complete article about Tandem, until than if you want to have lessons, than just download the app.

Top Gear

On the 4th July, 2016. Chris Evans, has announced on his twitter feed, that he had resigned from his post in Top Gear, and he also wished good luck, to his colleagues. And being completely honest, we’ve been expecting this for a long time, as the number of viewers of the BBC Show, has produced yet another negative record, on last Sunday.

Do you like coffee, and Swiss chocolate?

Well in this case we have good news, although I’m afraid only for our male readers, as according to our sources, at the end of this year a new café is going to be opened in Geneva, where the guests would be able to enjoy, more than just a cup of coffee. 😉

As at the place called Fellatio Café, next to the standard coffee house products, there will be an extra service available. Which shows quite well, that the customer is in the focus of this business.

Zoopla & Rightmove, otherwise your route to your first flat in England

Hey guys,
What is going on Mark here, back with another on, and as we mentioned in our previous article, we started a new series here on M&D’s Blog. With the title Tips and tricks before you’d move to England. In this episode we’re going to make sure that we give you all the necessary information, on how to find the ideal flat, and what are those criteria, what you’d need to meet.

Let’s start with the websites.

 zooplaand also RightmoveColourLogo

Well yes, these are going to be the websites, what I’d recommend, when you’re thinking about moving, but my absolute favorite, maybe because of the last few months massive developement is Zoopla. So we’re going to continue on with that, and the the pictures are going to show this website as well. And as Rightmove is not too much different, when it comes to functionality, what I’m going to write down is going to be true for both of the sites.

Why not to choose a House Share if you just came to England?!

Hey guys, what is going on Mark here, back with another article about life in England. In today’s episode we’re going to show you a bit of experience from the past, and give you a bit of housing advice. Stay tuned.

So I don’t know, or rather I should say I didn’t know if this article is going to be written, or if I add some more content to it, or just edit it at any point. And to publish it, well that was the biggest question of all. But because of the events what took place today (29/01/2016 ‘The editor’) in the flat, what I can’t tolerate anymore.

So let’s see that after the bit strong introduction, why this content has been created in the first place. And why is it a bad idea to move into a so called shared accommodation.

An immigrant’s opinion about the EU Referendum

Hey guys,
What is going on Mark here, back with another topic, which I have never thought I’m going to touch, but I have realized that I have never gave you my opinion about BRExit. So let’s get started.

(First of all though, I have to be completely honest with you, this is a complete translation of the Hungarian version. So there might be a few sentences in the following two paragraphs, that wouldn’t apply to you, if you’re reading this in the UK)

EU-flag

So what exactly is the EU Referendum, or BRExit?

And as I haven’t been following the publications in the Hungarian media, because of that I have no idea, on what you’ve been informed about, or what do you know about the situation. So lets start at the beginning.

Union_Flag_and_St_Georges_CrossThe prime minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron, has announced in one of his speeches in 2013, that if he were to win on the general elections in 2015, than he would definitely start a voting campaign about the EU membership. As you might be aware of the situation, in the last year David Cameron, and the Conservative Party have won on the general elections in 2015. And on 15th April, 2016 the BRExit campaign started, which would want to give the opportunity for the citizens of the United Kingdom, to express their opinions for the first time since 1975 about the United Kingdom’s position in the European Union.

I’ve experienced democracy

I have never thought, that I would be able to speak up in the Houses of Parliament. Especially not in the middle of the country, and the city of London. In Westminster Palace at the House of Commons. As of now finally I had experienced true democracy. As I would have been able to speak on behalf of friends and other relations of mine. And also there was a possibility to get feedback from Marcus Jones MP.

All in all it is now, when I really can say, that this country, and when I say this I mean the whole of the United Kingdom is much better in terms of opportunities and right now I see that if there are enough people, with the right mind-set, and the right reasons. Then even a government official would listen, and hopefully that would then end up, with the legislations not being changed, or with new opportunities opening up for many others.

Addressing the issue, of the future of “young people” is a matter of urgency anyway. As there are more and more of these guys are struggling to find a job, permanent accommodation, and any other opportunities to study, or to live their lives in a manner of how they want to do it.

The aim of the Young Homeless Parliament today was to let the respected ministers, and other government officials know what are the major concerns for those, who are in a situation where it is hard to get out of anyway. So it shouldn’t be made any harder, by cutting every last string.

Instead of that, the party, or parties on power really should concentrate on creating more of these strings, and forcing companies / employers for taking young people for an apprenticeship, and not for the ridiculous £2.73/hour but for an actual and nowadays much advertised living wage.

Even though it is not my vote, or not my word, which could turn the tide, and what could change the leadership (or the thinking of these people) in a country, which at the moment I’m barely a visitor in. Still I consider myself much more as an active citizen here, because of these opportunities.

Hereby I would want to give a big shout-out to Crisis, and Depaul UK for letting me taking part on their trip to London, and for asking me to speak up in front of a hundred or so young people, and MP of the current government.

Also I’d like to thank NYRG, YMCA England, St. Basils and last but not least Centerpoint for sending their representatives. And also I’d like to say congratulations to all members of this meeting for their contributions. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d be happy if I would be able to say hello to every of these people again.

Another adventure of mine in Hungary. Day 1

Hey guys, what is going on Mark here, back with another article. I hope everything is fine with all of you?! As with me it is, as the day has finally come, when I’m going to be sitting on the bus, and then about 24 hours later on the plane. Although at the moment it is not going to be British Airways. Instead it would be the megabus from Newcastle – Bristol. And from there the Ryanair flight FR8206, flying together with my cousin. Or at least that was the plan, until that moment, when it has come to the original departure time of my coach. But lets get to it.

15:30, 7th March 2015. John Dobson Street, Newcastle upon Tyne

Right now you might still be asking, what is going on with this guy? Megabus, and Ryanair? Why not British Airways?

And every of those questions are valid. But as you might (not) know, I’m not against any low-cost airline. Even though that I’ve already had a few rants about them. But sometimes, really-really sometimes, a bad experience like that worth to have, especially if I wouldn’t be travelling alone anyway.

Well at least it was like that in the beginning, and it seemed like that everything is going to be fine, but for some reason, my dear friend Murphy just thought that it would be a great idea, to screw up my day.

Well at least with the fact, that megabus have had a bit of an error in their booking system, and made my booking invalid, or lets just say modified it in a way, that I would have had to travel on the Newcastle – London – Bristol route. But this one has a few problems. One of them is that the first bus is at 01:40, which was already fully booked, and even if it wasn’t it is still a slim margin for any mistakes, as it would have arrived to London at 07:30 (according to the schedule). But only one accident on the A1, or just the icy conditions on the road would cost valuable minutes, and maybe my lateness. So the first bus which I would have been able to get onto was the 06:25 coach from Newcastle, which on its route stops at every second bush, and tree (okay, okay that might be a bit exaggerated, every fifth) service M12. Which I’m going to arrive to London at 14:00. But at 14:00 local time the original flight of mine has already departed from Bristol. So is it the end of the story? Or what is going to happen?

Well the story hasn’t even started yet, as I had a bit of luck, and with British Airways’ Frequent Flyer Programme I had some avios stacked up on my account. And with using those I have managed to book one ticket for the last flight departing from London Heathrow Terminal 3 today. Which is not a bad change after Ryanair. Just a bit uncomfortable.

As I had to call the owner of the airbnb flat, that I’m not going, and that he could call off the booking. Trying to get a refund from Ryanair (I think they’re going to be laughing on this until the end of the century) And afterwards without any sleep trying to survive until 06:25. And of course what other place I’d be in now, then a pub, as I left the flat with the intention that I’m not going back there for a while. And I’ve packed in everything, what I could and wanted, and hoped that I’d have an easy day.

And after all this it would be also the travel through London. Which would not be the worst part of the journey, as the only thing I’d need to do is get on the tube. And maybe I even have a chance to taste giraffe bar’s cheesecake, but at this time on Terminal 3. Who knows they might make it better there?!

And at the moment, I don’t really have a better way of “treating” myself. As I have imagined this day much more different than it is now. And the big question is really if everything started like this, what is going to happen when I’ll get there?

But before we go that far. Let’s see what would I need to do today?

After the trip above, that 1 and a half hours on London public transport seems nothing.

But our article is constantly updating, just as you might have got used to it, especially when it comes to travel. I’m going to announce the updates, on Facebook and on Twitter as a comment to the article. But I think I don’t even have to say that, as you already know this.

06:25, 8th March 2015. John Dobson Street, Newcastle upon Tyne

Finally we have departed although it is as cold on the bus, as it is outside, so it doesn’t really help. And about 65-75 passengers alongside me are freezing to death. And by this time we’re already leaving Sunderland.

2016. március 8. 09:20,
 Leeds, Yorkshire.

IMG_0868
Leeds Coach Station

Well finally we have arrived to this town as well. And I have been lucky, that I could have talked the route through with two locals from Middlesbrough, so the journey itself didn’t seem as hard, as it is going to be from now. As they were coming only until Leeds. So in the next 5 and a half hours it is going to be me my headphones, and the grey skies, until I reach the capital. For the moment that is really all, what I’m able to tell. As the coffee, and this last one and a half  – two hours of constant talking helped a lot. If anything happens during the route I’ll let you guys know.

12:20, 8th March 2016. M1 motorway, between Northampton and Milton Keynes

The scenery start to get really familiar. As during the course of the last year I saw this part of the country many times from the air, and from the same point of view as well. Especially with the uncountable number of coach trips to London. But I’m trying to forget a few of those, still they should be taken into account.

And even though I assume that every of you have seen motorways throughout your lives, and that you’ve experienced every of its benefits and drawbacks. But unluckily as this tax year is soon coming to an end. And most of the roads with North – South direction from London are under refurbishment. And with that the actual progress what anyone can make is quite difficult, as on most of the parts you could go with 70 mph, but than you’d have to slow down to 50 for miles and miles.
I’m not saying though, that it is boring to just sit here, and wonder out on the window. Because even if most of the UK motorways are a sort of ‘U’ shape structures, with the main ground higher than the actual roads. Sometimes you’re able to see all the wind powered powerplants, castles, curches, cathedrals, etc. And because of these sometimes sudden changes, you’d be waiting for the next one.

And as soon as I’ll have the opportunity to upload a video here. I promise I’ll do that.

8th March 2016. 14:00, Victoria Coach Station, Buckingham Palace Road, City of Westminster, London

As far as I was concerned miracles never happen, although my arrival to this place, after the half a day of waiting, and half a day of travelling finally I am at Victoria Coach Station. My journey from here at least wasn’t lonely, unfortunately only until Green Park. As there was one poor soul on the coach, who tried to query how she’d be able to get to Stansted Airport, and as I was the last one on the coach, she joined me. So we walked across to the Tube, and got on the Victoria Line, which I got off from at Green Park. As I had to continue my trip with the Picadilly Line, to get to Heathrow.

14:45 Green Park Tube Station, London

The only thing from now on is to get onto the train, which arrived in this exact same second, as I was typing. So next stop is Heathrow Terminal 3

15:20 London Heathrow International Airport Terminal 3, London

IMG_0900Well for Google Maps I tended not to believe anything, and unfortunately at this point it was also clear, that I shouldn’t have listened to it. Except of the planned one and a half hours, I have arrived to the airport in about 40 minutes. But at least I had the chance to make a few pictures, and to have a look around before I’d check-in for my flight.

IMG_0901

IMG_0905

17:35 London Heathrow International Airport Terminal 3, Gate 3

IMG_0909I really am waiting only for one thing now, which would be the boarding, and than after two and a half hours of comfort, and I’ll be arriving to Budapest. I never have expected that after all of the inconveniences today finally this plane would just push me a bit back to life.

18:00 British Airways Flight BA0870, G-EUUN, Seat 23F

Absolute comfort, not too many people, and one complete IMG_0921row of seats for myself. I’m not saying that all of this is British Airways privilege, as that wouldn’t be true. But one thing is for sure, after the whole day of travelling. And being in confined and airless places, like the megabus, or the Victoria and Picadilly line tube trains, this is definitely a dream.

Luckily we’ve been able to start a bit earlier from our gate, so hopefully we’ll be taking off soon.

Let’s see if I’d have an easy day?

Okay this might be a bit weak as a joke. But still gives you a bit of information on what is going to be happening in the next couple of days in my life.

But why am I travelling again. Well that is quite easy, I have received an email from easyJet on the other day, saying that I’ve been invited to their Cabin Crew Assessment Day at London Luton Airport on the 2nd March.

So let’s go over the plans shall we?

National Express all the way, and now with a bit worse transfer time at Leeds, then the last time. And at the moment of course I’m already on the bus, and in about 12 hours I’ll arrive to Luton Airport.

It must be the irony of fate, because I told to myself several times, that I don’t want to go back there. And because of that I could almost see Murphy, as he’s laughing and saying to himself. “Oh mate, you’re so going to go back, and not just go back for a few days, but live there”

Well if I’m honest, I’m hoping for that result. So stay tuned.

This article is going to be updated during the whole route in roughly every two hours.

Let’s just say, that I had an uneventful journey until Leeds, and as I’m looking at the clock at the moment, I say and maintain, that the next couple of hours are going to be the same as well. As the next coach I need to catch is at 23:55.

But at least until then I have plenty of time to have a coffee and to ‘destroy’ at least one pack of biscuits what I brought with myself for this route… 😀

One town with my eyes: Darlington

Darlington
One of County Durham’s big cities. And maybe the most important one in the industrial history of England. As it was part of the world’s first passenger train line, which is still in operation, as the East Coast Main Line today.

IMG_0327But lets just start with a history lesson. The town started life as an Anglo-saxon settlement, with the name of Dearthington, and has played a major role in trading. St Cuthberth’s Curch, and the marketplace are still part of the landscape, and it is quite an achievement, as these were built in 1183 A.D. Though the oldest building in town is St. Andrew’s Church, which has been built somewhere around 1125 A.D. and could be found in Haughton. Which is just on the outskirts of town.

During the 17th and 18th century, the town was still in the spotlight when it come to trading, and it appeared in a few road books, and other literature. The well known lines are from Daniel Defoe, who written these lines about Darlington. “Good bleaching of linen, so that I have known cloth brought from Scotland to be bleached here.” However he also disparaged the town, writing that it had “nothing remarkable but dirt” (the roads would typically be unpaved at the time)

IMG_0329

Many things have changed in the 19th century, when the Pease and Backhouse families have “ruled” the town. They were one of the biggest employers here, and it is safe to say, that almost everyone, directly or indirectly worked for them…

The most famous building was created while these families were here. This in nothing else, but the clock tower on the old market square. Which was a gift from Joseph Pease in 1864 A.D. Interesting fact about the tower is, that its bells are the sister bells of the Elizabeth Tower (or otherwise known as Big Ben)

Though even that doesn’t compare to the fact, what Darlington is most known about, and what have written the history for not just this region, but for the whole world. Everything started on the 27th September 1825, when on the Shildon – Darlington – Stockton-on-Tees railway line, George Stephenson’s locomotive, and its carriages have done the first passenger train journey, and opened a new chapter in history books.

So, why should we visit a town with such strong industrial history, and how could anyone actually get here? Lets see.

Although Darlington, with the population of about 110 – 120 thousand isn’t considered a too much of a big city, still at the edge of town you could find Durham Tees Valley International Airport, with constant flight between Aberdeen, Amsterdam, etc.

But instead of the plane, take a train to this place. From Newcastle it is only about a 20-25 minute journey. And both Virgin Train East Coast, and Cross Country Trains are providing a service. During weekdays there is one train in about every 20 minutes.

The coach, and bus systems are good as well in this town. National Express has a few coaches to Darlington on almost every day, and connects it with not just Newcastle, but with the capital as well. For the local connections Arriva is responsible, and they provide services to Newton Aycliffe, Bishop Auckland, Barnard Castle, Durham, Sunderland, and Middlesbrough.

Sights and landmarks

From Darlington’s history and size, there isnt’t too many things to see in town. Or lets say, not too many what you could mention individually. As the architecture of the downtown area could serve as a great start, as there are buildings here built in the 1100s, until the Victorian ages. You could always have a walk in one of the narrow streets, and passageways, during the morning, and when it is windy. As in between the houses the warm air gets stuck, and also in these hidden corners of town, you could find really lovely shops, and cafés. The marketplace, and the mall gives the usual North East feeling, with its shops, and cafés. Although it is worth to schedule a visit to Darlington for a Saturday, as on those days, there are loads and loads of street vendors around this area. And from  #sexysausage (or the Northumberland Sausage Company)’s freshly made products, until sweets, and many more you could have a great start on the streets.

For the train lovers the mandatory programme would be Head of Steam – Darlington Railway Museum. Where you could find Stepenshon’s steam locomotive, or Locomotion. But you could also have a look into the life of a railway worker from the beginnings, and also into a bit of history of model railways. Also on every third Saturday of every month, you could have a conversation, and watch a few gentlemen working on the restoration of the world famous L.N.E.R. Peppercorn Class A1 steam locomotive.

While there are many churches in town, while I was here unluckily I haven’t been able to visit either of them. But as far as the locals told me afterwards St. Cuthberth’s church is something you must see.

Restaurants, pubs, entertainment.

Like in any other town in this part of the country, where there is one university almost next to the other, naturally the number of pubs, clubs, and other entertainment facilities is vast. I wouldn’t really be able to recommend any, as I haven’t had the opportunity to try out most of them, and as I have experienced, it all depends, on how much you’d want to spend, as the quality is going to be great anyway. But I’d still say two examples, as from the outside these were the ones, what convinced me most. The Golden Cock, and The Old English Gentleman.

And with that I’ve used all of my material. So as a closure I could only say, that Darlington is one of those towns in North East England, what you should see, if you’re in this region. I’d recommend to plan it for one or maybe two days.
