Mobile providers in the United Kingdom

Well today, we have arrived to a point, which is also going to be essential, for you, as without a mobile phone it is quite hard to get by nowadays. Let’s see, what this category holds for you, shall we?!

Start with mentioning, that similarly to energy providers, there are also lots of companies to choose from. And the worst part is, that in many cases it isn’t entirely clear, what provider offers what, and which network does a smaller provider use.

But let’s not dwell on this too much, and start looking at the facts. The five big providers in the United Kingdom currently, are:

  • O2
  • EE
  • Three
  • Vodafone
  • BT Mobile

So there isn’t too much of a difference between this and the ones you might have got used to. All of them have their own separate network, and own towers, and when it comes to coverage, all of them could be considered as good. Almost all of them have the option, of a pay monthly contract, and as a SIM only pay as you go packages. But in most of the cases you will not be eligible for a pay monthly contract, at least the normal procedure with EE, and O2 would be that they’d run a credit check, and would decide afterwards whether or not they’d give you the contract. And in the near future we’ll give you a bit more information about these checks as well. But in advance just to get this out of the way, if you’ve just arrived to the country, than of course the credit check wouldn’t return any result, and at this point and time that would be a problem.

Let’s see the best currently available pay as you go packages from the above mentioned providers, and we have assumed that you would have a SIM free handset. And for the monthly costs we have calculated a maximum of £15, which could be considered average.

* As it turned out BT Mobile doesn’t have a pay as you go package, and the shortest contract they have avaialble is 12 months. And that they are just simply out of the league.

And just like in the case of the  energy providers, among the mobile carriers, it wouldn’t be the big companies, which would be the best. So let’s modify our first table, and look at an alternative, which would be giffgaff.

The example above clearly shows, almost as well, as anno in our FreeedomPop articles. Which you can access by clicking here. That at this point a company, the best value for money, is one, which is almost nothing more than a start-up. But this start-up has a contract with O2, and they provide the services using O2’s network.

To order a SIM card is quite easy as well, if you click on the link below, than you’ll be able to access the webiste, where you’ll be able to to just that, without paying anything for it. Just fill out the form, and click on “Order your free SIM” button, and in a few working days you’ll have the welcome pack in your post box.
