Mobile providers in the United Kingdom

Well today, we have arrived to a point, which is also going to be essential, for you, as without a mobile phone it is quite hard to get by nowadays. Let’s see, what this category holds for you, shall we?!

Start with mentioning, that similarly to energy providers, there are also lots of companies to choose from. And the worst part is, that in many cases it isn’t entirely clear, what provider offers what, and which network does a smaller provider use.

But let’s not dwell on this too much, and start looking at the facts. The five big providers in the United Kingdom currently, are:

  • O2
  • EE
  • Three
  • Vodafone
  • BT Mobile

So there isn’t too much of a difference between this and the ones you might have got used to. All of them have their own separate network, and own towers, and when it comes to coverage, all of them could be considered as good. Almost all of them have the option, of a pay monthly contract, and as a SIM only pay as you go packages. But in most of the cases you will not be eligible for a pay monthly contract, at least the normal procedure with EE, and O2 would be that they’d run a credit check, and would decide afterwards whether or not they’d give you the contract. And in the near future we’ll give you a bit more information about these checks as well. But in advance just to get this out of the way, if you’ve just arrived to the country, than of course the credit check wouldn’t return any result, and at this point and time that would be a problem.

Let’s see the best currently available pay as you go packages from the above mentioned providers, and we have assumed that you would have a SIM free handset. And for the monthly costs we have calculated a maximum of £15, which could be considered average.

Text messages N/A * Unlimited 3000 2000 Unlimited
Price N/A * £15.00 £10.00 £15.00 £15.00

* As it turned out BT Mobile doesn’t have a pay as you go package, and the shortest contract they have avaialble is 12 months. And that they are just simply out of the league.

And just like in the case of the  energy providers, among the mobile carriers, it wouldn’t be the big companies, which would be the best. So let’s modify our first table, and look at an alternative, which would be giffgaff.

The example above clearly shows, almost as well, as anno in our FreeedomPop articles. Which you can access by clicking here. That at this point a company, the best value for money, is one, which is almost nothing more than a start-up. But this start-up has a contract with O2, and they provide the services using O2’s network.

To order a SIM card is quite easy as well, if you click on the link below, than you’ll be able to access the webiste, where you’ll be able to to just that, without paying anything for it. Just fill out the form, and click on “Order your free SIM” button, and in a few working days you’ll have the welcome pack in your post box.

And being honest with you, really that would be it, the main principles, of mobile providers doesn’t have too many differences in the UK, than what you might have got used to. So it would be quite hard to write anything more about this topic. We hope, that we could have helped with your move, or if we could’ve made your planning a bit easier.

FreedomPop, part 3

Hey guys, what is going on Mark here, back with part 3 of the FreedomPop test service. And to be honest with you all. I have to say, that I’m more and more satisfied with, what they provide.

As you could have seen in the previous episode, I had some issues with the network, so I couldn’t really stay available when I was at home. Since then it has changed, and even during that one week period, they improved their network significantly.

Today we’re going to have a look at their online services, or otherwise known the MyAccount, and also the different pricing, and tariffs. But Mark hold on a second, haven’t you told us, that this is for free?

Yes I said that, and this still remains true, as they have free packages, although they have some services, what you could get for a small price to pay, but just scroll down a bit more, and you’ll see what I’m actually on about.

MyAccount

The first glance what you’ll have when you’ve logged in to your account, would be the usage statistics. Which would tell you about your billing cycle, the remaining amount of minutes, and texts what you can have, and also the amount of mobile internet used.

If you click / tap on the MyAccount menu, it will give you a few more options, such as the My Plans. This is the surface where you’d be able to reach the available Premium tariffs.

When you register for a test run. The system would automatically put you onto the Premium 1GB tariff. Which in this case is £8.99/month. And now you might be asking. Okay, okay, but where can I see the free tariffs?

Well the free tariffs are not going to be available from the MyAccount. For that you’d need to contact their customer support, who would give you information about the free service, and they would make the change.

Still undert the MyAccount menu, we could find an International Plans section, and you might think. There aren’t so many options there. It is still considerably more, than other providers. From which many would consider these services as a premium service, so if for some reason, you’ve been late with one of your bills, even with a single day, then you could say good-bye to your international package.

Not with FreedomPop though. What you see is what you get. You pay the let’s say £1.99 for your international package, which would start on the same day, as the purchase. And you’d be able to use it for a month afterwards. If you wish to cancel the service, contact customer support again.

Customer Support

As most of the startup businesses, they also using the power of the society, and in the United Kingdom, they have e-mail assistance as well. Of course this has drawbacks and benefits. But I’m sure, that as soon as they would grow to a level, where they could supply everyone with their services, they’d start their telephone based customer service as well.

And even though there’s still almost two weeks left from my tariff, so I shouldn’t jump to conclusions. But now it seems that I would stay with them, and I would use their services permanently. Even I’d consider choosing a premium package for myself, with the international option enabled.

But this is all down to the next two weeks. Until then, thanks for reading this update as well. If you have any questions please leave it in the comment section down below. Or write to me on Facebook or Twitter. If you liked this content make sure to subscribe for more. Until next time.

Peace out.

FreedomPop, part 2

Hey guys,
What is going on Mark here, back with the fresh update of this service. So I hope everything is fine with you guys, and that you might have considered to try out FreedomPop. If you still have doubts, then please just read through this article.

Screenshot_20160111-173328So it has been a week since I’ve started using this service, and I have to say. They still have much to improve on it. Although there is a high chance that some of the errors, what I have encountered, were not entirely the service provider’s fault. Still as the picture shows, at some places I’m barely able to get signal on my phone. (The screenshot itself was taken in my bedroom)

In terms of the device I’m using. It is not a new phone, but still one of the best I ever had. It is a Samsung Galaxy S3 (without the 4G/LTE capability). And as you can see it has been modified a bit, as it runs now on CyanogenMod CM13.0, which is based on the stock Android version of 6.0.1

But back to the service itself. So all in all while I’m walking somewhere, or let’s say I’m on the bus there isn’t any problems like this. The signal is perfect, the mobile internet connection is mostly in the HSDPA+ speeds instead of the standard 3G. And with that I have a smooth, and still satisfactory browsing experience. In terms of VoIP services they work as they should. The HD Voice of Facebook Messenger, Viber, WhatsApp, and Skype are perfect, and I could have used them properly over the mobile internet network. Although with HSDPA+ speeds, two-way video communication was not possible, but for standard literally VoIP calls it is perfect.

In regards of the network, as most of these kind of start-up businesses, FreedomPop of course doesn’t have their own frequencies, and their own signalling towers. Instead of that they are using the network of ‘Three’, but as far as I’ve seen even though ‘Three’ is a really established network around the UK, the FreedomPop service is still in beta testing. So improvements, and changes might occur in the future.

On the next week I shall be back with another update about this service. And also I’ll be looking back a bit to the past, just to give you an idea, on what is England like, as a foreigner, from (a bit more then) a years perspective.

I hope you guys enjoyed this content as well, if so pull the trigger on the subscribe button. If you have any questions or queries, please leave it in the comment section down below. Or alternatively leave a message on Facebook, or Twitter, or any of my other contacts.

Until next time. Peace out.
